Ep. 65: The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) or ‘It’s Not All True’

On a very special episode, Zach welcomes podcasters Chloe Riggs and Erin Mullane (Required Viewing with Erin and Chloe) to suss through the rubble of a great cinematic injustice as they examine with great vigor what is left of Orson Welles’ 1942 motion picture, ‘THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS’.

Within it all, they shall learn a hard lesson that history has far too often experienced time and time again in the pursuit of the cinematic arts versus the domination of the business motive.

But within all of this, there is still much revelry and BALLYHOO provided as the trio ponder over the modernism’s that could have served as dialogue, discover Foods that Orson would have enjoyed in today’s mass selection of stoner foods, and find more than one way to tell George Amberson Minafer to ‘Go to Hell’ as the vernacular would ultimately assume.

Ep. 36: ‘Two Weeks in Another Town (1962)’ or ‘2 Bad 2 Beautiful’

Zach welcomes back filmmaker Ryan Francis Johnson (Writer’s Workshop, Such a Nice Car (We Have)) to at long last cover the spiritual sequel to ‘The Bad and the Beautiful’ as they take trip through Vincente Minnelli’s 1962 film, ‘Two Weeks in Another Town’.

Buckle up for a wild international filmmaking journey as the boys catch up with how the creative combo of Minnelli, Douglas, Schnee, and Houseman returned to familiar turf, get further insight into the latter day Edward G. Robinson, break down a slightly scattered but intriguing plot, find appreciation for the layers found in certain performances, and discuss the films overall approach to upping the ante on its spiritual predecessor.

But this is Ryan Francis Johnson, King of Melodrama and Ideas. So naturally you will get some laidback but brilliant brainstorming as the two create a new theme park for Hitchcock, come up with the ultimate Alexander Graham Bell Biopic, and pitch the Vin Diesel vineyard.

Plus: Quentin Tarantino tries to direct Ryan in his new movie.

To check out Ryan’s work, head on over to his website: https://ryanfrancisjohnson.com/

And be sure to check him out as part of an upcoming series from previous guest John Strelec, ‘I Got Them Pegged’. Coming Soon!

Ep. 35: ‘Show Business (1944)’ or ‘We Want Davis’

Zach is joined this week by Author and Film Historian Pam Munter (Fading Fame: Women of a Certain Age in Hollywood) to unpack the trunks and get ready for a debut on the Vaudeville stage as they dive into Eddie Cantor and his 1944 film, ‘Show Business.’

Listen as the two discuss Pams work in researching the subjects that formed her short stories in the book, discuss the origins of Eddie Cantor and his popularity leading up to this 1944 outing, address the outdated elements ranging the gamut, show appreciation for the way the film creates a love letter to Vaudeville, discuss the persistent sexism present in Golden Age Hollywood, and take a particular interest in the story of the films very talented and hilarious co-star, Joan Davis.

There are also moments of levity with all the serious as they also question the bafflement of the opening song and you hear Zach’s plea for a recreation of Joan’s famous Vaudeville routine.

Ep. 34. ‘It’s A Gift (1934)’ or ‘The Legend of Carl La Fong… Whom If We Did Know, We Wouldn’t Admit It’

Zach is joined by Podcaster extraordinaire Jon Ekstrom (Jon of All Trades) to give proper tribute to the one and only W.C. Fields with a deep dive into 1934’s ‘It’s A Gift’.

Pack up the jalopy and watch out for the molasses as the guys get into the origins of how William Claude Dunkenfield became the W.C. Fields we know and love, learn a bit more about director Norman McLeod, break down the plot and how the comedy itself drives our investment in the plot, marvel at the precision and perfection of Kathleen Howard, revel in the masterful comedy set pieces, examine how the film plays into the realm of satire on the family dynamic, and find intriguing places where Fields comedy is felt in art of the present.

And as of those weren’t enough to make your sides split, the boys get into other hi-jinks like sussing out the importance of George Burns, learn the way Ed Wynn likes to stack light bulbs, and wonder along with the rest of the world…. HOW ABOUT OUR KUMQUATS!?!?!

Ep. 33: ‘The Night of the Hunter (1955)’ or ‘The Laughton Directs and He Endures’

Zach is joined by Film Critic and Podcaster Jack Hanley (The Superlatives Podcast, A History of You In 5 Films) to tackle the enduring and ever powerful hand of Charles Laughton as a director as they take a dive into the world of a Mother Goose Nightmare with 1955’s, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (Cue Sideshow Bob Theme)

Be entranced by the sermons of two film fans as they breakdown in detail the unique production history of the film, learn more about the legendary Charles Laughton and how his path led to directing the piece, introduce themselves to the ferocity that is Robert Mitchum’s backstory, revel in the artistry in every department from Cortez’s Camera to Brown’s Art Direction to Golden’s editing, mourn the tragic handling of the films initial release, and marvel at the many ways this film has inspired filmmakers to this very day.

The darkness of serious film chatter shall be overcome though with the light of humor as the boys wonder if Robert Mitchum should have played the shark in Jaws, listen to Gary Cooper turn down the role of Powell, and hear of Charles Laughton’s desire to perfect snow machines for film.

Ep. 32: ‘The Apartment (1960)’ or ‘F**k You, Sheldrake’

Zach welcomes back the one and only Adam Jewell to return to the Wild World of Wilder with a look inside the goings on in 1960’s ‘The Apartment’.

Listen in as the boys discuss the origin of the films creation and its connection to real life events, breakdown and analyze each performance within the context of its era and where that falls into today’s understanding, revel in the superb production design, how the film masterfully transitions from moments of humor to moments of drama, and discover for themselves how the film stands in the legacy of the Romantic Genre and the Comedy genre.

But even amidst the serious discussions, theres still plenty of levity to be had as the guys repeatedly reference The Simpsons to their own amusement and take a jab or two at the production code.

Plus: Adam unveils his grand theory regarding the connected cinematic universe of Fred MacMurray.

Ep. 31: ‘Isle of the Dead (1945)’ or ‘Isle of the Cev’ or ‘No One May Pause the Podcast!’

Zach welcomes back Podcaster and Musician Cev Moore (Film Guff, Here Lies Amicus, House of Hammer) to help him survive the dread that will unfold from Vorvolaka’s and Quarantine’s with a look at the chilling Val Lewton produced and Mark Robson directed classic, ‘Isle of the Dead’!

Pass the Cerebus at the shore to enter a place filled with Terror and Timeliness as the guys sift through the laughs and lessons within.

Tremble as they peel back the layers on Val Lewton and his importance in distinguishing terror from horror.

Shiver in your seats as they catch up with our dear friend Boris Karloff and what brought him to the world of Lewton in the first place.

Gasp in fright as they break down the dread fueled plot and how its themes carry a timely relevance.

And run for your life after you hear then revel in the twisted triage of sound design, cinematography, and music that create an atmospheric terror that has left an echo through the ages in the world of cinema.

But fret not, for humor is a great companion to have such a dismal island, and the two manage to have more than a few laughs amidst the sorrow. Listen as they put Christopher Lee in the Halloween movies, proclaim Boris Karloff the worlds first Goth, and try to suss out the accent of Skelton Knaggs.

This week Zach welcomes back filmmaker and podcaster Henry Jarvis (Reel Nerds Podcast) and he brings along The Arkansas Traveler as the boys dive into Elia Kazan’s prescient and audacious 1957 , ‘A Face in the Crowd’.

Tune in to engage in the spiraling madness as the boys learn more about the complicated histories of Kazan and screenwriter Budd Schulberg, how the films unsettling narrative draws a direct line to modern culture, how the films incredibly dark visuals and thematic power shine through uniquely in the 1950’s, and give spotlight to the incredible performer that is Mr. Andy Griffith.

But with all this drab, there has to be something light to offset it. Thankfully the boys find plenty of it as they witness Walter Matthau pitching his future movies, hear Barney Fife become terrified of Andy’s Method Acting , and we all gaze in awe Henry unleashes the ultimate analysis of the Transformers films.

Plus: Paddington for President !

Ep. 28: A Matter of Life and Death (1946) or One Is Starved for Discussion of Technicolor Up There

Zach is joined once again by filmmaker John Strelec (‘Antlers: The Web Series’, ‘Gunther’) to engage in a podcast of the Archers as they take a long and thorough look at Powell and Pressburger’s 1946 masterpiece, ‘A Matter of Life and Death’.

Listen in as the boys find about the origins of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, learn more about the state of the British film industry upon their arrival, revel in the glorious technicolor of Jack Cardiff, and break down a plot that deals with concepts of space, time, and love.

But of course, one is starved for laughter here. There will be humor aplenty as the guys wonder if it is possible to have edible film, listen to a story of John Huston’s boldness, and start a film business on the moon!

Ep. 27: ‘Batman: The Movie (1966)’ or ‘Batman & Robin Meet Brad, The Revue Becomes Rad’

Holy Ballyhoo Batman!

That’s right Robin, this week the Ballyhoo will discuss your most daring adventure as Zach sits down with podcast and filmmaker Bradley Haag (Reel Nerds Podcast, ‘Legend of Drunken Brew Master’) to talk about the Pow, Wham, and Zocko 1966 film, ‘Batman: The Movie’.

Hop in the Bat-mobile and join our heroes as they recall their respective Batman Beginnings, dive into the formation of the television show and how the film attempted to further capture the Bat-mania ensuing, dig into the surprising similarities between this film and future superhero films, ponder just how silly and wonderful at once can the film get, and discuss the importance of the groundwork this iteration of Batman laid out for future generations of Bat-lovers.

But whats this? Humor? Could it be from that Clown Prince of Crime? No gentle listener, but it does come in the form of our heroes coming to grips with Penguins disappearing henchmen, realizing the greatest flaw in the villains plan, re-writing the ending of The Dark Knight Rises, and reignite the debate about digitally removing mustaches.

Tune In This Week and

Same Ballyhoo Channel.

Ep. 26: ‘The Last Man on Earth (1964)’ or ‘Vincent V. Vampires: Dawn of Poptimism’

Zach is joined by podcasters Anthony Cubba and Brent Ballard (Poptimistic) to take a journey to the end of civilization with a look at 1964’s ‘The Last Man On Earth.’

Travail the abandoned city of Los Angeles (or is it Rome?) with the boys as they slay Vampires with Vincent Price. Along the way, they will find out about the films rocky pre-production, more on how Richard Matheson was involved and why that would crumble, show appreciation for an intriguing Vincent Price performance, find touches of brilliance even amidst the stumbles, and debate how the film holds in comparison to other adaptations of the source material.

But there are also plenty of laughs such as the boys listening to Vincent Price get rather cheeky throughout the show, conjuring up a mash up of Matheson and Star Wars, and puzzle over how long garlic can actually last.

PLUS: Daniel Day Lewis in the role of a life time!

Zach is joined by Author and Filmmaker Olivia Carmel (A How To Guide on Surviving Your First Bee Sting) to unravel the emotional highs and the lows found in Mitchell Leisen’s 1946 picture, ‘To Each His Own’, and the triumph of its star, Olivia de Havilland.

Get ready to have all the feelings as the two discover how the film holds a true balance that can make melodrama work, soak in the rich detail courtesy of Leisen’s direction, sing the absolute praises of Roland Culver, ponder over the outdated elements in the film plot, and learn a bit more about one….. BILL GOODWIN.

Within the episode is a story of courage and tenacity as the two dig as deep as one can into the life of the films star, Olivia de Havilland, and how her noble actions changed Hollywood for the better.

In all of this you will still find a moment or two to giggle at such fun matters as what not to do on a date while in a airplane and learning that Leisen made a 30 second Scorsese movie.

Saddle up as the two dive further into the world of Jack Benny in cinema, breakdown the wide variety of cast members from Jack’s show and beyond, discuss the madcap craziness courtesy of Morrow and Beloin’s script, revel in how the films premiere and reception are groundbreaking and carry on lasting effects to this day, reckon with the problematic material of comedy past, and give all the praise and discussion so over due to the films two biggest stars: Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and Theresa Harris.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of laughs on the trail like finding out about the creepiest party game of the 40s, Lil Hitch’s reactions to the film, find a way to re-tool the Wizard of Oz, find out who the Thanos of the Benny-verse is, and for Benny fans everywhere: we find out what really happened to the gas man.

Ep. 15: ‘To Be Or Not To Be (1942)’ or ‘The Legend of Joseph Tura… Whom You’ve Probably Heard Of…

On a very special episode, Zach welcomes back Ryan Frost to examine satire amidst wartime in Ernst Lubitsch’s 1942 masterpiece, TO BE OR NOT TO BE.

Brace yourselves for an uproarious and thought provoking chat as the boys discuss the importance of the Lubitsch touch, the concerns surrounding the script, marvel at the way the script tows the line of comedy and suspense, revel the bountiful brilliance of the films supporting players, dig into the controversies that surrounded the preview screenings and promotion of the picture, dissect Carole Lombard’s role as the “straight man” in the film, and find out just how Mr. Lubitsch got the best film performance out of Jack Benny.

Things do get serious as the boys talk about how challenging art and satire is received then and today, the fine line dark comedy possesses, and about the tragic death of Carole Lombard.

But like the film itself, there is silly to pair with sincerity as the guys gab a bit about Cary Grants early years, help Robert Stack solve the mystery of Robert Stack’s legacy, and get a brief visit from Mr. Hitchcock.
